The ink cartridges can work the same way, many of them work in several models of printers, but they usually are not consecutive models.they skip around. Can anyone tell me if there is an alternate driver available to connect a HP Photosmart 7350 to a HP Touchsmart Tx2 laptop running Win Vista 64 hooked up via USB I followed the directions on HP's site and chose the alternate driver (HP Photosmart 5550) and configured the port correctly but I cannot get the laptop to communicate with the printer. For Windows 7, you have other options as crjdriver posted. It's strange, but does work very well when you run into this situation.

You can leave the alternate printer name or change it to what you have, but it has to be installed AS the alternate.you use the hardware wizard, to tell your computer you want to install the Deskjet 5500 and it does so because it has native drivers for that printer. it uses the native Vista drivers, for the alternate printer, not the one you actually physically have I have used alternate drivers from HP, so I understand what is being posted.you actually tell the computer to install the alternate printer, and it shows up as that. It is vital that you follow the directions in the manual to install this type of machine correctly, for example, whether to install the software first, or plug in the device first. Here is the Vista 32-bit software and driver at HP: ((The software is only an ink shopping thingy.)) the window that comes up will show you which you have then post which it is. Right click on "My Computer" then click on Properties.
Can you find whether you have Vista 32-bit or 64-bit please?
